Biomet Hip Replacement – Zirconia Ceramic Femoral Heads
Biomet was a part of the 2001 hip recall due to faulty zirconia ceramic femoral heads manufactured by St. Gobain Desmarquest. This hip implant recall was initiated after authorities had found that the component was breaking at a rate that was higher than expected.
In 2007, Biomet issued a recall of its Tibial Bearing ARCOM UHMWPE, sterile. The reason for this hip replacement recall was improper laser etching for size.
In 2008, another Biomet hip was recalled. This hip recall was for its Biomet brand Modular Microplasty Cup Inserter, an instrument for its hip prosthesis acetabular cup component. The reason for the hip implant recall was that the weld at the lock location could break during impaction, a condition of being pressed closely together and firmly fixed.
Biomet Hip Failure Symptoms
Biomet hip replacement failure symptoms include:
- Hip pain
- A sensation of grinding, or limitation of motion
- A fracture sometimes preceded by an audible pop
How Do I Find Out If I Have a Biomet Hip?
The Biomet hip recall applies to zirconia ceramic femoral heads manufactured since January 1998. If you had your hip surgery prior to January 1998, your hip replacement is not included in this recall. Please talk to your orthopedic surgeon if you have questions regarding your hip replacement.
If you had hip surgery after January 1998, you should talk to your surgeon, or the hospital where you had surgery, to find out whether you received a Biomet hip with the zirconia ceramic femoral heads subject to this recall. It may take some time for this information to be located.
