GranuFlo lawsuits are currently in preparation nationwide. According to The New York Times, more than one-third of the 400,000 patients receiving dialysis each year to treat end-stage renal disease (kidney failure) use GranuFlo, made by Fresenius Medical Care.
Since Fresenius Medical Care violated federal regulations by not providing doctors with accurate safety information, and since the drug GranuFlo has the potential to cause serious injuries and side effects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has called for a Class I GranuFlo recall.
This Class I GranuFlo recall is grouped in with the most serious type of recalls, because there is a probability that the product can cause serious health ramifications and/or death. Oklahoma GranuFlo lawsuits are currently in preparations to gain compensation for those have suffered from the side effects associated with GranuFlo.
Common GranuFlo Side Effects
A GranuFlo lawsuit is based on the pain and suffering caused by some of the more common side effects associated with the drug. Several medical studies link GranuFlo to severe side effects, including increase in heart attacks, cardiovascular death, cardiac death, and catastrophic cardiovascular problems.
Other GranuFlo side effects include heart problems, metabolic alkalosis, low blood pressure, sudden heart attack, heart arrhythmia, stroke and death.
The FDA Class I GranuFlo Recall
In 2012, the FDA prompted an emergency recall of GranuFlo after discovering patients undergoing dialysis on GranuFlo are six times more likely to suffer severe cardiopulmonary arrest and/or death.
The FDA says that Fresenius failed to warn doctors prescribing GranuFlo about the severe risks and side effects associated with the medicine. Because of the Grade I GranuFlo recall issued by the FDA, GranuFlo lawsuits are taking place across the country to seek recovery for the serious and possibly fatal GranuFlo side effects.
What is GranuFlo?
Prior to the GranuFlo recall, GranuFlo was used across the country in dialysis centers. GranuFlo is a dry acid product used to treat patients suffering from kidney disease. GranuFlo is a dialysate, or a substance that physicians commonly used to treat acute and chronic kidney failure. When properly functioning, the kidneys clean the body of waste chemicals. Patients suffering from kidney failure suffer from a pH level imbalance, where the pH balance becomes more acidic than it should be. Dialysates, like GranuFlo, help to neutralize that imbalance through the use of chemicals the body converts into bicarbonates, an alkaline substance.
The concern for many doctors and patients is that the ingredients of GranuFlo produce an excess of bicarbonate, which can lead to health issues or death. The severity of the side effects naturally led to a Grade I GranuFlo recall.
