Mirena Lawsuit

The number of complaints the U.S. Food and Drug Administration receives from women who have experienced issues using the birth control device Mirena mounts every day. While no Mirena recall has been announced at this time, from June to November 2012, the FDA reported approximately 45,000 complaints filed. As a result of injury from using Mirena, women are filing lawsuits against its manufacturer, Bayer. Individuals who’ve suffered from Mirena side effects are participating in preparations for Mirena class action lawsuits, and seeking the council of an experienced Mirena lawyer.

Mirena Side Effects

The Mirena class action lawsuit is based on the findings that using the birth control device Mirena can result in serious side effects. These problems can include:

  • Abscesses
  • Birth of child with birth defect
  • Erosion of areas of the vagina
  • Infertility
  • Decrease libido
  • Inflammation of the membrane that lines the internal organs
  • Intestinal perforations
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease

The FDA became aware of these serious Mirena side effects through numerous complaints. Reports point to the device’s ability to migrate from the original position after insertion, which can result in it perforating the uterus or embedding itself in the uterus. If this happens, a doctor must surgically remove the device. Some women have required a complete hysterectomy because of the damage that was caused by the Mirena side effects. Women, who became pregnant while using Mirena, risk serious side effects including pregnancy loss, and a permanent loss of fertility. The side effects associated with this device are serious and warrant the consultation of an experienced doctor, and Mirena attorney.

Mirena and FDA Warnings

At this time the FDA has not called for a Mirena Recall, but they have released a warning. In 2009, the FDA issued a warning to Bayer over Mirena. It stated that Bayer was “overstating the efficacy of Mirena” in its promotions of the product, making the risks and side effects appear minimal to doctors and patients. The warning pointed to promotional materials that omit the contraindications regarding both untreated lower genital tract infections and conditions stemming from an increased susceptibility to pelvic infections.

A recent study by the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that approximately 30% of doctors surveyed said they feel that these devices are unsafe for women. While a Mirena recall has not yet been imposed by the FDA, several Mirena lawsuits are taking place across the country due to Mirena’s serious side effects.

What is Mirena?

Mirena—hormonal intra-uterine device (IUD)—is a form of birth control placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy for up to five years and to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. The contraceptive is a T-shaped plastic hormone-releasing system and should be inserted by a trained healthcare provider. While the use of hormonal intra-uterine devices is common, and no formal Mirena recall has been announced at this time, a Mirena lawyer could help you decide if moving forward with the Mirena class action lawsuit is for you.

Mirena Recall: What to Do

Anyone who has suffered health complications from using Mirena is urged to contact their doctor as soon as possible. If you or someone you love has been using this device, and has suffered from Mirena side effects, you may be eligible to participate in a Mirena class action lawsuit, and should seek the services of an experienced Mirena Lawyer.

McIntyre Law is staffed with experienced attorneys that will work to help you recover damages. A Mirena lawsuit will seek recovery for pain, physical injury, suffering, medical expenses, and lost wages. If we determine you are able to participate in a Mirena lawsuit, we will work hard to help you recover damages. If you are suffering from side effects associated with Mirena, please contact us for a free, no obligation consultation with an experienced lawyer familiar with the case.
