Zimmer Knee Recall

Zimmer Knee – NexGen Knee Replacement

Many artificial knees rely on a cement-like adhesive to bond the thigh bone to the portion of the knee replacement that bends. However, many surgeons try to avoid adhesives because they can break down, leading to device failure. To counter this, Zimmer offers an uncemented version of the CR-Flex knee that relies on the bone to naturally fuse with the knee implant.

In March 2010, a group of prominent knee surgeons presented data indicating nearly 9% of patients examined two years after knee surgery had knee replacement problems, and required a revision knee surgery. Of that data another 36% showed signs of loosening of the uncemented, CR Flex artificial knee. These failure rates are higher than expected, and are believed to be due to design defects. Based on the high number of calls we have received, we believe other models of the Zimmer NexGen artificial knee may also be defective, and will ultimately necessitate a knee recall.

Zimmer Knee Replacement Problems

Potential knee replacement complications include:

  • Knee replacement failure
  • Revision or replacement of artificial knee device
  • Loosening of replacement knee implants
  • Knee and joint pain
  • Difficulty standing or walking

How Do I Find Out If I Have A Zimmer Knee?

Patients have been reporting knee replacement problems related to Zimmer knees since at least 2008. If you have had knee replacement surgery, talk to your orthopedic surgeon or the hospital where you had your surgery to find out whether you received a Zimmer knee, which may eventually be included in a knee recall.

For privacy protection reasons, the orthopedic surgeon or the hospital where your surgery was performed may require that you request this information in person.
