What is a GranuFlo Lawsuit About?

There are several nationwide GranuFlo lawsuits underway. A New York Times story reported that more than one-third of the 400,000 patients who undergo dialysis each year to treat end-stage renal disease (kidney failure) use GranuFlo, which is manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care.

Fresenius violated federal regulations by not providing doctors with accurate safety information. The drug GranuFlo has the potential to cause serious injuries and side-effects, so the U.S. Food and Drug Administration called for a Class I GranuFlo recall.

This Class I GranuFlo recall is classified within the most serious recalls because there is a probability that the product can cause serious health ramifications and/or death. GranuFlo lawsuits are being prepared currently in order to properly compensate those who have suffered from the side-effects associated with GranuFlo.

Common GranuFlo Side-effects

A GranuFlo lawsuit is based on the pain and suffering caused by some of the more common side-effects associated with the drug. Several medical studies link GranuFlo to severe side-effects, including increases in heart attacks, cardiovascular death, cardiac death, and catastrophic cardiovascular problems.

Other GranuFlo side-effects include metabolic alkalosis, low blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, stroke and death.

The FDA Class I GranuFlo Recall

In 2012, the FDA prompted an emergency GranuFlo recall after it discovered that patients who undergo dialysis on GranuFlo are six times more likely to suffer severe cardiopulmonary arrest and/or death.

The FDA said that Fresenius failed to warn doctors prescribing GranuFlo about the severe risks and side-effects associated with the medicine. Because of the Grade I GranuFlo recall issued by the FDA, GranuFlo lawsuits are taking place across the country to seek recovery for the serious and possibly fatal GranuFlo side-effects.

What is GranuFlo?

Prior to the GranuFlo recall, GranuFlo was used across the country in dialysis centers. GranuFlo is a dry acid product used to treat patients suffering from kidney disease. GranuFlo is a dialysate, or a substance that physicians commonly use to treat acute and chronic kidney failure. When properly functioning, the kidneys clean the body of waste chemicals. Patients who suffer from kidney failure suffer from a pH-level imbalance, which means that the pH balance becomes more acidic than it should be. Dialysates, like GranuFlo, help to neutralize that imbalance through the use of chemicals the body converts into bicarbonates, an alkaline substance.

The concern for many doctors and patients is that GranuFlo produces an excess of bicarbonate, which can lead to health issues or death. The severity of the side-effects naturally led to a Grade I GranuFlo recall.
