Noble McIntyre on September 13, 2011
Arlene Benton, 71, was killed in a car accident in LeFlore County on the afternoon of September 8, 2011. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Galen Benton, also of Henryetta. They were traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 271 when a car traveling in the other direction suddenly entered their lane, striking their vehicle. The Bentons’ car was overturned, and came to rest upside down. Unfortunately, the story only gets worse from there.
After their vehicle flipped, the Bentons were pinned inside. By the time help arrived, it was too late. Arlene Benton was transported to Sparks Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., but her injuries were too extensive, and she died a short time later.
Galen Benton was flown to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, where he was listed in critical condition. He sustained internal and external injuries to his trunk, head, arm and leg. He is now in stable condition.
The vehicle that caused the accident was driven by 45-year-old Jacqueline Harjo. Surprisingly, although she was driving the vehicle at fault, her injuries were much less severe than those of the Bentons, and she is currently listed in good condition at St. Francis Hospital.
It’s not known at this time what caused Harjo to cross into the oncoming lane, or whether she was driving under the influence of alcohol. But judging by preliminary accounts, it seems Harjo may be to blame for Arlene Benton’s death.
Tragedies like this are never easy to hear about, and according to car crash statistics, they occur all too often in Oklahoma. The first question on people’s minds is usually, what could have been done to prevent this? Unfortunately, all that can be done now is to determine the cause of the car accident, assign responsibility, and ensure that the injured parties get the care they require.
